The UN has declared a state of famine in 3 new regions of Somalia where there is the worst drought in 60 years and the situation is obviously critical.
According to Zenit (www.zenit.org – 18/08/11), «the search for food and help is turning into a large-scale migration where people have to travel great distances on foot, with donkeys or spend the last of their savings to be transported on over-crowded trucks.
Fleeing from the drought-affected areas, many families are forced to abandon the elderly, pregnant women, weak and sick children. They arrive at their destination … in deplorable conditions, worn out and starving…»
The crisis is affecting over 12 million people and affects in different ways the Horn of Africa: Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, northern Kenya, Gibuti, some parts of Uganda and South Sudan.
In Somalia, the crisis is affected also by the political situation and it is estimated that more than 150,000 people have flocked to refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.
Many humanitarian organizations have reacted to saving the lives of these people, also in response to Benedict XVI’s appeal on July17th, 2011: «May these suffering peoples not lack our solidarity and the material support of all people of good will».
AMU continues to raise funds for this emergency. To date, the sum collected amounts to €11,228.66: A heartfelt THANK YOU to all who have generously and immediately responded to the call!
The seriousness of the situation and the urgency to intervene invite us to reflect on the cause of the crisis and the needs – in the Horn of Africa and other areas at risk – to act before such crises become catastrophes, through medium and long-term development projects that aim to solve the chronic problems that afflict the populations of many countries.
