The Brazilian Amazon, especially the Óbidos region, has been devastated by heavy rains that have caused serious problems for the population. With the improvement of conditions, it has been possible to resume the missions and reach the communities with the assistance kits provided by the project ” Prevention, vaccination and treatment for the “ribeirinhos” of the Amazon”
.
The rains of the last few months had not been seen in the lower Amazon area for 30 years, the “ribeirinhos” say . This led to a rise in the water level that for many weeks flooded many homes, overwhelmed plantations and prevented fishing, the only means of sustenance for local families. The affected population found refuge with friends and relatives in more internal and hilly areas, thus increasing the population density of some places and therefore increasing the risk of contagion and the spread of the Covid19 pandemic, especially among the younger population. For a few weeks, the water level has dropped and this has allowed the hospital boat to resume its journeys . Each mission has brought basic necessities to the communities, such as food, water, hygiene products, products for children and medicines. The aim was also to provide basic health care, carrying out triage to identify possible infections from Covid19 or other diseases, a consequence of the precarious conditions resulting from the floods. During the meetings with the local population, awareness-raising activities on the use of masks and disinfectants, as well as on behaviors for correct hygiene and social distancing, were also fundamental. Our mobilization has drawn the attention of the authorities to the need to get the vaccine to this isolated and vulnerable population, especially in light of the possibility of the spread of new variants of Covid19. Today it is not yet possible for private individuals to independently acquire vaccines, but we have managed to reach specific agreements with the SUS – Sistema Unico Sanitario (equivalent to the Italian ASL) through which the hospital ships “Papa Francesco” and “Papa Giovanni Paolo II” can carry out vaccinations with the doses provided by the Government. For a population so affected by the pandemic and floods, it was essential to bring psychological, spiritual and fraternal support, renewing hope for better days. It is important for those who are used to being isolated to have the certainty that they are not alone at this time and that from different parts of the world there are people ready to support these communities, in such a critical moment in their history.
The project is part of the international campaign “A vaccine for all #DareToCare”
