War in Ukraine, a year of interventions

One year after the outbreak of the war, we take stock of the actions undertaken by AMU and AFN representing the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement, in collaboration with Caritas-Spes Ukraine.

A Year of War in Ukraine A year ago, on February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a military offensive against Ukraine. The intense escalation of violence resulted in numerous losses of human life, injuries, displacement of civilians across the country, and severe destruction and damage to civilian infrastructure and homes. Many civilians are unable to leave the dangerous areas and are forced to survive without access to basic services . Millions of people across Ukraine are without electricity, thus unable to use heating systems, while temperatures – now that it is winter – have dropped below zero in most of the country. Since the beginning of the conflict until today AMU and AFN, representing the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement, used part of the funds raised to provide reception and assistance activities for internally displaced persons, carried out by Caritas-Spes Ukraine.

A YEAR THAT LASTED AN ETERNITY

365 days of war in the words and experience of Mira Milavec, a Slovenian Focolarina who has been living in Ukraine for several years where she works for Caritas Spes. “This year of war is a year, but it seems like an eternity (…). I would never have imagined experiencing a situation like this firsthand”. This is how our conversation with Mira Milavec, a Slovenian focolarina who has been living in Ukraine since 2019, begins. Her tireless commitment has seen her on the front lines during this year of conflict, working to support the population with Caritas Spes Ukraine, whose activities have also been supported by the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement through the non-profit organizations Action for a United World (AMU) and Action for New Families (AFN).
