Sandu, the village regent is enthusiastic about the project: “I am very happy with the new school and the help it will bring to our children who will be able to enjoy a good education. We have nothing, but we have contributed with the materials we have, such as sand and stones and with our help in the works” .
The project A school for all
With the project A School for All , the school structure “Morifindugu Junior Secondary School” is being expanded. It is being equipped with essential services – drinking water, toilets, chairs and desks – to facilitate access to education and improve the quality of learning. Furthermore, thanks to the new school, many adolescents from Serekolia will not have to abandon their families, but will be able to stay with them and study close to home, protected and cared for by their community.
The state of the works
In recent months, starting with the reclamation of the land for the new structures, we have proceeded with the foundations for the new part of the school. Immediately after, the construction began and is still ongoing. During the same period, the excavation and construction work for the new latrines began. The construction work for the desks and furniture for the school began earlier than expected, because it would have been difficult to find and transport the wood during the rainy season (from May to November). Some materials, for the roof and ceiling or some doors and windows had already been purchased and transported to Serekolia in anticipation of the deterioration of the roads that occurred during the rainy season. It is thanks to the work of the community that the project continues apace: the materials and their transportation, for example, were the first fundamental steps for the construction of the new classrooms, toilets and the water well.
Why build a new school
Supporting the construction of a school, a well and latrines is essential to accompany communities towards autonomous development. It means offering the possibility of change to future generations, building a bridge between the present and the future.
“We are very happy. Even though we are too old to go to school, our children will really appreciate this help and their children too. We also appreciate the help for the water well, because our community really needed it, we have suffered a lot these past years for water.
When we are in heaven what is happening will continue to give us smiles as it will continue to help our future generations, not yet born.”
