The A School for All project in Sierra Leone is making great strides. The country has very low school attendance . In the district of Koinadugu, which includes Serekolia, the village where AMU is involved, it is estimated that only one in six boys or girls attends middle school during adolescence. For this reason, AMU is expanding the school structure “Morifindugu Junior Secondary School” with its project and is equipping it with essential services such as drinking water, bathrooms, chairs and desks. Many of the adolescents of Serekolia will no longer be forced to leave their families to reach other schools, and – especially girls – will be able to study close to home, protected by their community.
The completed works
The construction of the ecological latrine has been completed. All that remains is to paint it. The water well has also been dug and the hand pump has been installed. The students and staff of the school were allowed to take drinking water from the well. The production of classroom furniture, which began in May 2022, has been completed: 100 chairs and 100 desks , including painting, are ready for use. Other construction material – such as rigid ceiling panels, metal doors and windows – has already been transported to Serekolia and is available for the continuation of the work.
A dream come true all together
The dream of building this school was made possible by a fundamental ingredient: the involvement of the Serekolia community . In fact, everyone participated in the work, aware of the need to have a larger school for their children in the village.
