Sahar is a 62-year-old woman living in Homs, Syria , a difficult situation where the situation of women and the population requires constant humanitarian aid . In recent years, she has had to deal with a very serious bereavement—the loss of her daughter—and some serious health problems: all of this has caused her a profound psychological distress from which she has been unable to recover.
The herniated disc, severe back pain and inflammation of the ankle ligaments prevented her from carrying out the simplest activities.
daily. The trauma of her daughter’s disappearance, however, prevented her from looking to the future.
Furthermore, in the meantime, there had also been a forced move: it was really difficult for Sahar to accept the new house.
Something, in short, had “broken” inside this woman. Yet, all these wounds slowly began to heal when Sahar entrusted herself to the care of the solidarity physiotherapy center that AMU supports in this city through the humanitarian project Seeds of Hope in Syria .
Physiotherapy and psychological support: healthcare projects in Syria
Therapist Ola began treating the ankle area with ultrasound and ice packs, and had her perform ligament strengthening exercises, balance exercises, and gait retraining. She also gave her valuable advice on proper posture during daily household activities. After several sessions, the pain gradually decreased, and the woman regained her ability to move and be independent.
But the treatment process didn’t stop at the physical level: Sahar was also accompanied on a psychological support path.
Counselor Susan worked with her in numerous individual sessions. At the end of the sessions, the woman was finally able to accept the events of her past and began to find solutions that would help her move forward with her life. She learned to take care of herself and rediscover her personal resources.
Today, this beautiful story of resilience shows us how coordinated medical care and emotional support are essential. Now, with some added confidence and a clearer outlook, Sahar can finally get her life back on track.
