Ecuador: from shrimp to coconut, Sálima’s youth refuse to give up

After a difficult start in the fishing industry, a group of young people in Sálima, Ecuador, turned a market failure into a remarkable success thanks to the Sunrise+ project

In the community of Sálima , a group of young entrepreneurs has written a chapter of redemption, demonstrating that failure doesn’t exist, only opportunities for reinvention. It all began with a dream: to bring vacuum-packed shrimp and fish fillets to market.

The beginning of the dream in Sálima: the “Jolimariscos” project

New machinery from the Sunrise Project arrives in Sálima, Ecuador: young people welcome the equipment for producing coconut products. To bring this initiative to life, the young people underwent intensive training that prepared them in every aspect: from creating and structuring the business idea, through accounting, taxation, and digital marketing, to developing a comprehensive business plan called “Jolimariscos.”

With enthusiasm skyrocketing, the first investment in machinery for the initial phase of the project was made in June 2025, ready to conquer the market. Despite the logistical challenges associated with the premises provided by the parish council, the young people’s determination remained undiminished: they redeveloped the spaces with their own hands, ready to launch the venture.

The market challenge and the turning point with the Sunrise+ project

But when a technical analyst conducted the market study, the news hit like a cold shower. The project was neither feasible nor profitable. There were already other associations in the area dedicated to the same sector, and people clearly preferred fresh produce over packaged produce. Young entrepreneurs from Sálima examine professional machinery in Ecuador: 80% of the equipment has been successfully converted for coconut processing.

However, instead of giving up and letting their dreams fade away, the group reunited and decided to come back stronger than ever.

The engineer proposed three new business ideas, and that’s when the magic happened: coconut and its derivatives won everyone’s hearts! They imagined a universe of possibilities: refreshing pipas (green coconuts), natural coconut water, artisanal ice creams, creamy smoothies, fried coquitos , and premium coconut oil.

In November 2025, the surprising discovery: 80% of the machinery already purchased in Sálima could be reused for this new business activity.
