The teachers, but especially the children, can’t contain their enthusiasm, they can’t believe their eyes and they keep wanting to open the taps to drink the water that has finally arrived near their school. A milestone made possible thanks to the construction of 3 new extensions to the water network , one of which is right near the Nombe school. Niyonsaba , a third-year boy, is keen to tell us that: “I’m happy because the water is within our reach, close to the school. Before, when we were thirsty, we had to go and look for it in the streams. Now that I’m here, I won’t be thirsty anymore, I won’t need to go and get it far away and I’ll be able to use it to drink and also to clean the classroom or to wash my hands”. Until now, the children and families of the community were used to going to get water far away, having to go away for a long time, even during lessons. Furthermore, the water from the streams they drew from was not controlled and brought with it bacteria and parasites that caused diseases. Today the water that comes out of the fountains born from the project Water source of life and development in Ruyigi is clean and safe! Thanks to the intervention of AMU and CASOBU and the collaboration with the population and local institutions, access to drinking water is no longer a concern in the hill. This will also improve the hygienic and sanitary conditions of the children of the Nombe school and of the 67 families of the surrounding community.
