Autonomy and serenity rediscovered with the Seeds of Hope project in Syria

Physiotherapy and psychological support in Homs: the Step Center program has restored health, independence, and healthy boundaries to Maysaa's life.

Maysaa is married, has four children, is a housewife, and works as a caregiver for an elderly person. She suffered from various health problems, particularly in her neck and back. To address these issues, she was recommended the Step Center , the center in Homs that AMU supports as part of the Seeds of Hope in Syria project. Advice that Maysaa followed.

When she arrived, the team of specialists welcomed her warmly, activating two different paths for her: physiotherapy and psychological support.

From loss of mobility to first progress with physiotherapy

The first time Maysaa entered the Step Center studio she couldn’t move her neck and spasms in herA Step Center therapist performing a cervical mobility and posture exercise on Maysaa. Her shoulders and hands impeded her ability to move. Even the simple act of carrying a handbag was impossible—too much for her—and she couldn’t lift objects weighing more than a pound.

Thanks to exercises and physiotherapy, his abilities improved day by day.

Small successes followed one another in a crescendo of personal satisfaction and newfound independence: she was able to lift weights, carry things equally with both hands, and was able to move her previously restricted neck again.

Psychological support: finding serenity and healthy boundaries

The psychological support provided by the Seeds of Hope project in Syria was also of great help to her. While she previously suffered from anxiety and struggled to maintain peaceful relationships with others, she is now a more confident woman at peace with herself. A Step Center specialist conducts a psychological support and active listening session for Maysaa in Homs.

“I didn’t know how to say ‘no’ to anyone. I’ve regained my serenity and learned to set healthy boundaries with others: now I can say no to what hurts me and yes to what I can truly do.”

There were words she couldn’t say, feelings she couldn’t express, problems that couldn’t find a voice. Now Maysaa can say with a smile: “I’ve become capable of letting off steam.”
