Tequio is a very common practice in Mexico and describes the gift of one’s commitment to the community.
Shortly before the start of the lockdown to limit the spread of Covid19 , and while waiting for the programs for the social and work reintegration of former drug and alcohol addicts to be started, the team working on the project “LiberarSé – Refuge of Hope” invited the communities of San Vicente Chimalhuacán and Ozumba to participate in a tequio to finish the renovation and maintenance work on the shelter. During the day, the participants, before joining in the small cleaning and maintenance work on the shelter, were able to get to know the team and the activities of the center better with the important impact it could have on the community itself. The day was also organized with the support of many friends and supporters who donated the material, tools and excellent food for a rich lunch break . The tequio was a beautiful day, concluded with the celebrations for the birthday of Beremundo (the creator and driving force of the Refuge) and an excellent opportunity to activate a circle of reciprocity with the participants, today more aware of what each one can do to support the work of the center and how much the community itself can benefit from it.
