Accompanying children to become aware of the different aspects of the complex concept of peace : this was one of the objectives of the workshops Living Peace: Peace as a School Project. Educational proposal for active and responsible citizenship that AMU organized at the primary school of the IC Falcone in Grottaferrata (near Rome) in recent weeks. The school participated in the project with fourteen classes from the first to the fourth grade for a total of about 300 boys and girls . Who participated actively, getting involved by sharing their ideas, and cheerfully carrying out the activities proposed to them. They experienced first-hand the beauty of committing to a more just and peaceful world. They understood that they could resolve the small conflicts that arose between them through simple gestures of friendship. They then rolled the peace die , a large dice with six special faces, because instead of numbers there are images and phrases of peace to live every day.
Children’s words
The words of the children who participated in the workshop describe, better than any other story, how necessary it is to talk about peace, and to do it especially with them. Here is what the little ones wrote: “For me, loving everyone at this moment is going back to my country to hug my dad who stayed there” (Ukrainian girl in third grade). ” When I go to the supermarket with my parents I always see a black boy who asks for something to eat. One day I only had four candies, I thought that I have no money, but these four candies I can give to him with a smile . So I gave them all to him and I was very happy. For me this is loving everyone” (second grade girl). “For me, loving everyone means loving the other, the planet and all its living beings” (second grade boy). The peace education project will continue in the coming months with some activities that will be carried out in class by the teachers with the collaboration and support of AMU. The journey will end with a peace march!
