A project for Iraqi refugees in Jordan
Jordan, with its 6 million inhabitants, today hosts 2.7 million refugees. The Iraqi refugees are only (so to speak!) 60 000, while the Syrians are regularly recorded ten times as much.
An impressive reality because it documents – writes the General Director of Caritas Jordan to Agenzia Fides – “that the richest and most advanced nations are home to a limited number of refugees, despite in these countries there are forces who earn power precisely by fomenting the refusal to immigrants.”
“Jordan is open to all – continues Wael Suleiman, Director of Caritas, we are aware that we play an important humanitarian mission, and we want to continue.” However, the situation is “explosive” and “many Jordanians are now poorer than many immigrants.”
AMU has decided to work together with Caritas to help alleviate this emergency, with a project that is for the benefit of Iraqi refugees who, unlike refugees from Syria, are less protected and are not allowed to enter into regular work contracts. The project, which is also addressed to Jordanian citizens in need, consists in a series of training activities to give the opportunity to approximately 200 people to find a job or start their own. We also are setting up several micro-projects where the beneficiaries can practice during the training period and, if the activity consolidates, they will find a secure job.

Un progetto per i profughi iracheni in Giordania
La Giordania, con i suoi 6 milioni di abitanti, accoglie oggi 2,7 milioni di rifugiati. I rifugiati iracheni sono solo (si fa per dire!) 60 mila, mentre quelli siriani regolarmente registrati sono dieci volte tanto.
Una realtà impressionante perché documenta – scrive il direttore generale di Caritas Giordania per l’Agenzia Fides – «che le nazioni più ricche e avanzate ospitano un numero esiguo di profughi, nonostante in quei Paesi ci siano forze che guadagnano potere proprio fomentando il rifiuto per gli immigrati.»
«La Giordania è aperta a tutti – continua il direttore della Caritas Wael Suleiman, siamo consapevoli di svolgere una missione umanitaria importante, e vogliamo continuare.» La situazione però è “esplosiva” e “tanti giordani sono adesso più poveri di molti immigrati”.
L’AMU ha deciso di impegnarsi insieme alla Caritas per contribuire ad alleviare questa emergenza, con un progetto che va a beneficio dei profughi iracheni i quali, a differenza dei profughi provenienti dalla Siria, sono meno tutelati e non hanno il permesso di stipulare contratti di lavoro regolari. Il progetto, che si rivolge anche a cittadini giordani in necessità, consiste in una serie di attività formative per mettere circa 200 persone in grado di trovare un lavoro o di avviare un’attività propria. Si stanno inoltre allestendo diversi microprogetti dove i beneficiari possano fare pratica durante il periodo di formazione e, se l’attività si consolida, trovare stabilmente lavoro.
