Grazie Carlos!

With gratitude we remember a friend who left us.

With regret, but at the same time assured that he is now in the fullness of the Father, we sadly inform you of the terrible accident that Carlos Martinez suffered a few days ago. Carlos was a former member of our Board of Directors, who returned to Argentina in 2014 after having a serious problem of health. During his recovery he used to follow physiotherapy when suddenly, for a gas meter explosion at the office of his physiotherapist was hit by a blaze, which caused him serious burns all over his body. After a few days in a coma, he died Saturday, November 5 as a result of his injuries.

I have a very vivid memory of Carlos Martinez, which I will cherish for many years. I met him when he was responsible for various activities of the Focolare Movement at the “Cittadella Lia” in Argentina, and had proposed to AMU some social and educational actions. Afterwards, in 2006 he moved to Rocca di Papa (Rome) and on top of everything became a member of AMU’s Board of Directors.

Con tristezza, ma al tempo stesso la certezza che ormai è nella pienezza del Padre, abbiamo saputo del gravissimo incidente che alcuni giorni fa ha subito Carlos Martinez, ex membro del nostro CdA, rientrato in Argentina nel 2014 dopo aver avuto un serio problema di salute. Si stava riprendendo ed era solito seguire sedute di fisioterapia quando improvvisamente, per una esplosione del contatore del gas presso lo studio del suo fisioterapista, è stato colpito da una vampata che gli ha procurato ustioni gravissime su tutto il corpo. Dopo alcuni giorni di coma, è deceduto sabato 5 novembre in seguito alle ferite riportate.

Di Carlos Martinez ho un ricordo molto vivo, che ho portato con me in tutti questi anni. Lo avevo conosciuto quando era responsabile di varie attività del Movimento dei Focolari alla “Cittadella Lia” in Argentina, ed aveva proposto all’AMU alcune azioni sociali e formative. Successivamente, nel 2006 si era trasferito a Rocca di Papa (Roma) ed era diventato tra l’altro membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione dell’AMU.

Once, talking with him, with his characteristic bluntness (not for nothing he was from Cordoba!), he took me by surprise and made me understand how, when we had worked together on joint projects for the citadel, my past attitude had caused him discomfort and dissatisfaction, while I was convinced in all good faith to have acted at best. But my belief that I had done things “perfectly” from a technical point of view had foreclosed on him and others the chance to express themselves freely and to feel understood and listened to. Since then I have tried to keep this lesson to heart and, while always trying to best achieve my duty, I paid attention not to crush the other with technical rules, but rather to “linger” in their needs and to help the other through listening and sharing life, in order to arrive at appropriate solutions adapted to its specific needs. It is a fascinating process, which will never be perfect, but it opens the way to the encounter with every neighbour, and therefore even today I say “Thank you Carlos!”

Una volta, conversando con lui, con la sua caratteristica schiettezza (non per nulla era argentino di Cordoba!), mi colse di sorpresa e mi fece capire come il mio atteggiamento passato, quando avevamo collaborato insieme a progetti comuni per la cittadella, era stato per lui motivo di disagio e di insoddisfazione, mentre io ero convinto in tutta buona fede di aver operato al meglio. Ma era proprio la mia convinzione di aver fatto le cose in “modo perfetto” dal punto di vista tecnico che aveva precluso a lui ed altri di potersi esprimere con libertà e di sentirsi compresi ed ascoltati. Da allora ho cercato di tenere a cuore questa lezione e, pur cercando di realizzare sempre al meglio il mio dovere, ho posto attenzione a non schiacciare l’altro con regole tecniche, ma piuttosto a “perdermi” nelle sue necessità e ad aiutarlo con l’ascolto e la condivisione di vita, ad arrivare a soluzioni appropriate ed adatte alle sue specifiche esigenze. È un processo affascinante, che non sarà mai perfetto, ma ci apre la strada all’incontro con ogni prossimo, e per questo ancora oggi dico “Grazie Carlos!”.
