World Disability Day – Commitment in Syria

Since 1992, December 3rd has been celebrated as the International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. On this occasion, we would like to remember the commitment of AMU alongside disabled people in Syria with the program “Seeds of Hope”.

In Syria, one of the consequences of many years of war and international sanctions is the large number of people with disabilities caused by impairments, fractures and injuries . Even people with specific needs and different abilities from birth have seen a worsening of the assistance and care services dedicated to them due to the decrease in health facilities. The theme chosen by the United Nations for the World Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2021 is “Transformation towards a sustainable and engaging society for all” and Amu is making its contribution through various interventions of the “Seeds of Hope” Program in Syria. With the school for people with hearing disabilities in Aleppo , supporting 130 children and teenagers who attend the courses, and accompanying 60 patients with speech therapy courses, 470 patients who have hearing problems and 750 families with awareness-raising moments, even outside the center. With the support of the after-school program in Homs that from this year will also accompany children with special needs and with functional physiotherapy treatments aimed at 400 patients, but also support for the social inclusion and psychological well-being of disabled people and their families. The difficulties that arise from these situations, in fact, are not only linked to the economic aspect, given the high cost of assistance, but also to the need to support people and families who are not prepared and often do not have the means to receive adequate medical care and treatments.
