Ukraine, our intervention after the dam collapse

In the Odessa region, a new phase of intervention has begun in June in the context of the Ukrainian emergency to offer support to displaced families, starting with those affected by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam

The dam that blew up on the night of June 6 poured tons of water into the valley: a reservoir that contained about 18Ukraine - Odessa dam collapse million cubic meters of water and flooded an area with 32 settlements in the Kherson region, home to more than 42,000 people. The situation is made especially difficult by the continuous shelling that significantly complicates rescue efforts.

According to various estimates, 16,000 people at risk require evacuation assistance or on-site support.

Caritas-Spes, with which the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement, AMU, AFN collaborates,Ukraine - Odessa dam collapse is committed to helping the people affected by the collapse of the dam, and launched an appeal in June which we also joined, directing part of the response action to the Ukrainian emergency precisely towards them.

So far 150 families (309 people) have been able to receive assistance . These are people who are in a very difficult financial situation, who have lost sources of income.

Among the beneficiaries: 52 families have elderly members; 22 people are disabled; 12 people are pregnant or breastfeeding women with children up to 2 years old; 11 people are people with serious illnesses and 7 families are made up of single parents.

The assistance that will be offered to them will allow us to meet their most urgent needs.
