Two years ago the war in Ukraine began. Two years ago, AMU and AFN, representing the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement, undertook numerous actions to support the Ukrainian population that needed urgent aid: from food to medicine, from psychological support to reception for displaced persons. There are many stories that we have told, stories of lives that have received concrete help from our support. Among these interventions there is one that we have not yet written about, but it is a beautiful story because it has to do with children . It is about the renovation of a building in the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi to make it suitable for welcoming Ukrainian girls and boys traumatized by the war and transform it into a meeting and support point. The works were many and complex: thermal insulation, systems, floors, fixtures, toilets… in short, a total makeover. The result is a wonderful space for children :
the environment is colorful, lively, full of games. A safe haven where you can have fun, learn, express yourself, but also rebuild yourself. In fact, many children in this center follow psychological help courses that are so essential for those who experience the trauma of war from an early age . And then there’s more: English lessons and craft activities.
Older children can instead take professional courses, with which they can acquire new skills and dream of a new future. The renovation of this center has therefore served to open the doors to imagination, creativity and above all hope, for those Ukrainian children and young people who for two years have known the shock of a community wounded by war. The results are remarkable: the gradual disappearance of the fear of war, being together with other children to spend moments of peace, feeling here finally “protected”.
