Less than a month before the start of the new school year, we’re sharing the story of Natalie, a Syrian girl from Damascus whose life was truly changed by the support of our Seeds of Hope project, allowing her to resume her studies after a temporary setback.
An unexpected cry for help
In September 2024, the ” Our Youth, Our Future” Center closed enrollment for its high school graduation program after reaching its maximum capacity. There were no more spots available. But when young Natalie walked through the Center’s doors, her eyes reflected shyness and hope.
She sat quietly and began to tell her story. The previous year, she had taken her high school diploma but failed. That failure had left her with a devastating sense of defeat and the fear that her dreams of continuing her studies would be shattered. With her family facing a difficult financial situation, finding a place to study and receiving adequate financial support had become even more difficult.
Even though she knew registration at the Center was closed, she decided to show up anyway. She was simply looking for a new opportunity, something that would help her try again and not give up. Her words couldn’t be ignored. It was clear that behind them lay a sincere desire for redemption. For this reason, the team at the center decided to delve deeper into her situation.
An exception that changed her life
Staff from “Our Youth, Our Future” visited her at home, met her family and listened to details of their daily lives and
challenges they unfortunately faced. During the visit, their financial difficulties became clear, but also the immense moral support they offered her and their confidence in her ability to succeed, if only given the right opportunity.
After this meeting, the Center made an exceptional decision. Natalie was accepted, becoming the sixty-first student that year. This wasn’t just another number on the student list; it was a concrete sign of how an opportunity can truly make a difference in a person’s life. Natalie consistently attended classes, participated in educational activities, asked questions, and invested every ounce of energy into making up for lost time. The journey wasn’t easy: repeating her high school graduation year required immense patience and daily commitment, but her tenacity proved stronger than any obstacle.
The finish line of maturity, and beyond
As the months passed, everyone began to notice the change. Natalie was gaining more and more confidence and a better ability to face academic challenges. It was clear that this opportunity represented much more than just a place at school: it was a new beginning that rekindled her hope. Then came the days of her final exams, which the girl faced with a mixture of anxiety and hope. When the news of her promotion arrived, Natalie was truly happy.
But this story doesn’t end there. Two years later, in March 2026, Natalie returned to the Center to explain that that moment of success marked the beginning of a new journey. Today, she is in her first year of university at the Faculty of Science, majoring in geology.
The commitment of the “Our Youth, Our Future” Center
The experience of failing her exams, which had been seen as the end of the journey, instead became the starting point for a better future. This transformation was made possible by the Center’s readiness to welcome cases like hers and by the services offered, which address fragilities and convert them into strengths and successes. At the “Our Youth, Our Future” Center, the belief remains unshakeable: every young person deserves a real opportunity to learn, realize their dreams, and shape their future. And this is one of the reasons why the Center is supported by AMU with the “Seeds of Hope” project.
