Smile at the sound of the bell

Testimony of the mother of Abdul, a hearing-impaired child who learned to communicate by attending the EHIS center in Aleppo.

Abdul at the EHIS center in Aleppo, Syria (Seeds of Hope)Abdul is a Syrian boy who suffers from severe hearing loss. Until he was three years old, his mother did not know how to help him: “I was hopeless, desperate and destroyed.”

When she accompanied him for the first time to the EHIS center in Aleppo it was only for a trial meeting. This facility, supported by the Seeds of Hope project, is a school for hearing-impaired children and young people, where the children are supported both psychologically and in their learning.

When Abdul and his mother were leaving the school to go home , the bell at the center rang. The woman stopped, hesitated: “I was almost shocked. I asked myself why this bell here in here. I felt a very strange feeling.” At that moment the schoolyard filled with joyful children: It invaded me like a wave of hope.” Abdul was admitted to the EHIS center, and from there a new perspective on life began for mother and son.

“His condition has improved a lot. Before, I couldn’t understand what he was saying. Abdul at the EHIS center in Aleppo, Syria (Seeds of Hope)And he himself had enormous difficulties: he could not hear, he could not speak, he did not understand. He could not pronounce a single word. Honestly, I never imagined that one day my son would be able to call me “mom,” call his dad, or simply ask for water to drink.” And instead Abdul has made enormous progress in his ability to communicate, guided by the professionalism and care with which teachers and psychologists at the EHIS center carry out their very delicate work. His mother has received something as a gift that she did not have before: optimism. “I am very proud of my son and I feel that he can always improve. I hope that all the children in the world who suffer from hearing problems become a source of hope and optimism for their country and for their teachers.”
