As with all projects throughout 2020, also for “ LiberarSé – Refuge of Hope ”, in Mexico, we had to manage delays due to the measures to combat the spread of the COVID19 virus. Not being able to start working with guests until the end of September, the team’s effort was focused on closing the preparation and maintenance activities for those that had started.

It was necessary to continue to ensure care and food for the rabbit breeding and to begin selling the animals, expanding the radius to new markets , including in nearby communities. We continued to raise awareness among the communities about addictions, proposing the project and involving them in the work of setting up the shelter. The carpentry workshop, now fully operational, instead dedicated its production to the last pieces of furniture needed to finish the structure and the capacity of the local team in managing agricultural activities was strengthened.

Between June and August, to deal with the Covid emergency, the project’s activities were aimed at supporting the shelters for the detoxification of young people and adults addicted to substances in the municipality of Nezahualcóyotl with which the AC Urban Youth Movement and Promoción Integral de la Persona AC, promoters of the shelter, have been working for over 5 years.
These homes, in fact, operate thanks to donations from the families of the guests or by raising funds from local supporters and the lockdown, with the decrease in activities and the economic crisis of recent months, has reduced donations.

The emergency project ensured food, personal protective equipment and basic necessities to 4 homes and 270 guests, managing to start a circle of reciprocity between the homes themselves where those who had a surplus, compared to what they received, decided to put it back into circulation, available to the others.

Once the area surrounding the structure was tidied up, at the end of September it was finally possible to welcome the first 7 boys into the Shelter : Efraín, Christian, Leonel, Ángel, Alejandro, Sergio and Enrique who, after completing the detoxification period, can begin their path to social and work inclusion.

In a still unstable scenario, we are continuing to work so that the project can ensure the right support for the reintegration paths of the guests, also encouraged by words like those of Alejandro: “I want to be part of this first generation of San Benito and experience the possibilities offered by the LiberarSé model. I am sure that speech therapy, the life of prayer, work and community in such a calm and peaceful environment, at the gates of the city, will help me enormously to continue my step towards the liberation that I ardently desire for my life and for the people who are close to me”.
