In March 2019, an exceptional flood hit Mozambique and the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement (AMU with AFN and MdF ) immediately took action to support the local population through the mission of the Fazenda da Esperança present in the affected areas. The initial interventions concerned assistance to the population: the devastating scenario imposed direct actions to satisfy the primary needs of food, health and hygiene. Thanks to the support of donors, the Coordination contributed to:
- distribute emergency food rations to people who had lost their homes;
- build 550 huts and 550 temporary latrines for displaced families;
- thus relocating families to small plots of land granted by the government;
- repair the 4 shelters, the nursery, the church, the hospital and the secondary school of the mission;
- prepare a shed for the construction of concrete blocks, which will be used to build permanent homes for the families.
Immediately after the initial intervention phase, always in collaboration with Fazenda da Esperança, we are carrying out a support and accompaniment program for the creation of sources of income and livelihood for the population . In particular, the plan includes:
- equipment, supplies and manpower for the cultivation of 70ha of agricultural land;
- the construction of a carpentry shop for the production of doors and windows to be used in the new houses that are already under construction.
For the rebirth of Mozambique, as in every situation of difficulty and vulnerability, it is essential to strengthen the capacities of local communities so that, even after a serious emergency, they can lay the foundations for a conscious, dignified and lasting recovery.
