The explosion in the port of Beirut has shocked a city and a country that was already going through a major economic crisis. Our commitment is first of all to be able to restore trust and hope and to make the many supporters who responded to our appeal, from all over the world, feel close.

A few months after the Beirut emergency was launched, we managed to restore the homes and shops of many families before winter. “Dad, 91 years old, and I, thanks to the help we received, were able to tidy up the house and restore the windows and doors in time, just two days before the rain,” Maria tells us. Reciprocity is the characteristic of the many testimonies we receive in this period: in fact, the aid has not only come from our fundraising, but the Lebanese themselves have taken action to support as best they can those within the community who have suffered more serious damage or are living in more precarious situations. Marlene tells us that in addition to the support and presence of Humanité Nouvelle , which is managing the interventions on site, she has also received the solidarity of other neighbors: “They offered me French windows and lampshades that they didn’t need, so I was able to manage the situation at first. Then I was able to restore electricity. Painting and repairing the damage to the balcony roofs was still needed. I asked a friend to come and estimate the price and, since I couldn’t afford the service, he reassured me by saying: “Providence will come and when it arrives you will pay me. During this time I have worked a lot and I can afford to wait a little”. And it is thanks to the support of AMU and Humanité Nouvelle that I was able to pay for a good part of the work” .
Ripristinare le case e assicurare condizioni di vita dignitose è solo parte del nostro impegno. Accompanying those who suffer such strong and sudden trauma and material losses also means being able to rebuild their confidence in themselves and in the community, trying to convey the feeling of not being alone.
