The humanitarian crisis in Goma
Since January 2025, a serious humanitarian crisis has erupted in the provinces of North and South Kivu, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The occupation of vast areas by M23 rebels has paralyzed political and economic institutions and led to the closure of banks in rebel-held areas.
Daily life became increasingly difficult: many lost their jobs and an entire population was struck by a severe famine.
This is the context in which AMU —together with the Focolare Movement’s Emergency Coordination and Action for New Families (AFN) —launched a special fundraiser to support the people of Goma. This initiative provided material assistance and, at the same time, a concrete sign of solidarity and hope.
Goals achieved thanks to the fundraising for Goma
Thanks to the funds received, it was possible to purchase and distribute essential food items: nine 100-kg bags of beans, 187 25-kg bags of rice, and 20 boxes containing 50 packets of salt each. Over 170 families, for a total of 1,020 people , were able to benefit from this support.
The distribution was organized in collaboration with local community leaders.
Some delegations personally went to the villages around Goma to deliver food, also reaching formerly displaced people who, after returning home, are still trying to rebuild a normal life.
Health care, reconstruction and music
In addition to food distribution, this support covered the medical expenses of two seriously ill community members who had been hospitalized and were unable to afford treatment. It also made it possible to rehabilitate two homes at the local Focolare center, destroyed by bombing during the fighting related to the rebel invasion of Goma.
Finally, this support allowed the youth musical group GEN FUOCO to produce a song , an expression of hope and creativity, which you can listen to at this link.
