Gaza, the Latin Patriarchate: “We cannot leave these families alone”

A lucid and bitter analysis of the humanitarian crisis, but also the determination to move forward with aid

The devastating conflict that broke out on October 7, 2023 has created a very serious humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The war has inflicted destruction and human suffering. The numbers recently communicated to us by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem demonstrate the extent of the crisis: Gaza: The emergency continues45,000 dead, 80% of infrastructure reduced to rubble, health facilities decimated and 11 universities destroyed.

The conflict has also created a very serious humanitarian emergency in Gaza marked by population displacement, and a shortage of food and medicine, in addition to the psychological trauma that every war always leaves in its wake.

AMU and Latin Patriarchate Support in Gaza

AMU tries not to leave the families of Gaza alone and stands alongside the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in financially supporting these families and contributing to their reception in the only two Christian churches left standing in Gaza. Gaza: The emergency continues

The ongoing aid action is realized through the daily distribution to 680 people of food and drinking water, as well as hygiene products, glasses, disposable plates and sewing materials.

The war does not stop

Outside and around these two churches the war continues unabated. The lack of electricity plunges all areas of Gaza into darkness and this only adds to the chaos and fear. Local supermarkets have closed either due to lack of supplies, or – worse – because they were destroyed by bombs. Finding food has become a challenge.

The difficulties are enormous: the incessant bombings have transformed what were once simple routine trips to shops and pharmacies into risky undertakings. Shopping has become dangerous, yet the Patriarchate team periodically goes in search of open shops so as not to leave the families of the displaced without food, especially considering that half of the people welcomed are children and elderly people with chronic diseases.

The determination not to abandon the families of Gaza

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem expresses a profound reflection on the current situation and future prospects. With a heartGaza: The emergency continues heavy, recognizes the uncertainty surrounding the end of this prolonged conflict and the lack of signs of easing. However, the determination not to give up is strong. The families who have already suffered so much, says the Patriarchate, deserve continued support. “It is our moral obligation – it states – to stand with them in their time of need” . The commitment is clear: “We must remain resolute in our dedication to this cause” and offer aid and sustenance as long as the war persists.
