Earthquake in Syria – support for the population has begun

The Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement together with AMU and AFN onlus has collected about 370 thousand euros so far. A first installment of 100 thousand euros has already been sent to some Syrian areas hit by the earthquake

The first phase of intervention in Syria was launched in February and will end in August, to then be remodulated based on the evolution of the emergency. Below are the planned actions.

FIRST PHASE OF THE INTERVENTION IN SYRIA

In this first phase, the intervention program will be aimed at approximately 2,500 people and will indirectly reach between 5,000 and 10,000 people in the three earthquake-stricken areas of Aleppo, Latakia and Hama. The action will concern:

  • assistance with basic needs;
  • renovation interventions for homes;
  • psychological support.

Some examples of support interventions:

ASSISTANCE TO PRIMARY NEEDS
  • Provision of basic necessities – food, blankets, medicines, clothes , etc. – to displaced people hosted in makeshift reception centres such as churches and mosques;
  • financial contribution to the neediest families;
  • provision of post-hospitalization medical services and mobility aids, medications, and physical and psychological treatment sessions;
  • distribution of food parcels to families in difficulty (in collaboration with other organizations);
  • financial support for small artisans to buy back or repair lost equipment and tools and restart their business.
RENOVATION INTERVENTIONS FOR HOMES DAMAGED BY THE EARTHQUAKE
  • Coverage of costs of inspections and technical assessment tests on the stability of buildings by technical commissions of engineers;
  • financial support to families for work to consolidate the foundations of buildings and for the renovation of damaged homes;
  • coverage of costs for the purchase of work tools for craftsmen (blacksmiths, plumbers, carpenters, electricians) so that they can resume their work in the damaged homes;
  • financial support for the payment of rent for those who have lost their home or need temporary residence due to the unsuitability of their home.
POST-EARTHQUAKE PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT
  • Coverage of home care costs for elderly people living alone;
  • implementation of collective activities and initiatives for group psychological support , particularly at temporary reception centres;
  • creation of training laboratories for psychological support to provide tools and methodologies to operators and volunteers active in rescue operations.
