There are news stories that embody the redemption and history of entire generations. Today’s news from Burundi is one of them: in the village of Gicaca , located in the province of Cibitoke , access to drinking water has finally become a reality.
As a testament to this extraordinary achievement, our local partner CASOBU ( Cadre Associatif des Solidaires du Burundi ) sent us a message with the words of the villagers. This testimony explains, better than any technical data, the significance of this success of our water project in Burundi (Water Source of Life and Development).
“Our grandparents told us that one day we would see water here. They left without knowing what drinking water was; our generation has had the honor of seeing what our grandparents so longed to see, but never saw.”
The water emergency in Burundi
To understand the immense scope of this event, we need to understand what Gicaca was like until yesterday. We’re talking about an extremely remote village, where daily living conditions have always been harsh, and the water crisis, often a daily occurrence in Burundi , was—if possible—even more acute here.
Without any source of safe water, the population was forced to use contaminated water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. The consequences of this deprivation were grave: every year, unfortunately with a certain punctuality, the village was struck by cholera epidemics . In this corner of Africa, the fight against cholera is a daily battle extremely difficult to win, because too often it is water itself that is the vehicle of disease.
Before now, no one in Gicaca had ever seen drinking water flow from a fountain . For the villagers, accustomed to struggling with precarious living conditions, seeing that clear stream gush forth marks a real and historic change.
Looking beyond, for sustainable development
Today, in fact, the story of this community changes forever. Ensuring drinking water in Burundi , especially in rural areas, is not only a response to an immediate vital need, but represents the cornerstone of the right to water in developing countries. And this is reflected on multiple levels:
-
Public health and prevention: Access to clean water and sanitation finally breaks the chain of cholera and other diseases, saving many lives, especially children.
-
Education and social empowerment: Fewer hours spent laboriously searching for water from distant and contaminated sources allows children to attend school regularly and in good health.
-
Dignity and local economic development: the availability of safe water within reach lays the foundation for improving agricultural and domestic activities, starting a virtuous cycle of self-sufficiency.
The power of cooperation in Burundi: AMU, CASOBU, and CEI
Change of this magnitude cannot be achieved alone. This historic achievement is the fruit of a strong alliance and shared planning on the ground, a virtuous example of international cooperation in Burundi .
The construction of water infrastructure in Gicaca was made possible thanks to the tireless commitment of local partner CASOBU , the crucial support of CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference) funds , and the extraordinary determination of the local community, who actively participated in every phase of the work. AMU supporters, whose generosity constantly supports our projects, played a crucial role, as always.
Our commitment continues
Gicaca is a huge achievement, but the challenge for drinking water in Burundi doesn’t end there. Many other hilly and isolated communities await the completion of the Rubirizi-Rukana aqueduct so they can experience the same transformation their ancestors dreamed of.
Through the Water Source of Life and Development project, AMU continues to work to provide clean water and education to thousands of people.
