Crisis in Syria: Poverty is defeated with work

Issam's rebirth is through coffee. AMU supported him in starting his new business with microcredit provided by the RestarT program. It is one of the ways to fight poverty in a Syria in full crisis.

The food crisis in Syria is a direct consequence of poverty . Eleven years of war have exhausted the population’s ability to meet the basic needs of daily life. Among these, food. One of the key points to leverage for recovery is work. In this way, Syrian citizens will be able to start producing income again and improve the economic situation of their country and their families. In this way, they will be able to overcome the crisis and reduce the enormous pockets of poverty in Syria today, without having to abandon it. In short, we start again from work to stay in our own country: this is the meaning of the RestarT program. That is, starting over through the provision of microcredits in tools and equipment, which can allow Syrian citizens to start small entrepreneurial activities. Issam, who was involved in this program, managed to improve the economic conditions of his family: that is, he managed to put lunches and dinners on the table. The man, who is 53 years old, lives with his family in Al-Hamidiyeh in the Homs region. Before the war he worked in commerce and his financial conditions were very good. Then he lost everything. A year ago, the first steps of rebirth took place. In fact, Issam opened a mini-market with the idea of selling different types of coffee in an area of the city without bars. The chances of success of his business therefore immediately appeared good. His application to the RestarT team to access microcredit was approved and he was provided with a large quantity of coffee to fill the shelves and a small refrigerator to be able to sell cold drinks. Issam is an expert in his field and he did not let this opportunity slip away. With his skill he expanded sales, also introducing new products: preserves, canned dairy products, cheeses, yogurt, honey and oil. To repay the support received from RestarT, Issam has committed to sell the products at cost price, without any profit, to those in need. Issam’s family is now a little less poor, and is certainly more serene.
