Syria is also trying to start phase 2 of the fight against Coronavirus.
The situation, already difficult before the pandemic, is serious and many families continue to have great problems due to the lack of work and therefore of economic availability for basic necessities and care (for this reason we have sent an appeal to Europe and the United States to lift the embargo against Syria ). In this scenario of great uncertainty, the operators of the Syria Emergency Program continue to keep alive the relationship with the protagonists of our projects and are trying to remodel the activities according to the provisions for the prevention of Covid19. The state has confirmed the fourth year middle school and high school exams, therefore, it is necessary to equip ourselves as soon as possible, because the program is broad and students need support to store and understand all the notions and obtain the best results. At the ” Casa dei bambini “, AMU’s after-school program in Damascus , for example, we start again from the youngest and from study support to ensure that there are no consequences on their preparation due to the restrictions given by the Coronavirus. For now, physics lessons are starting again, dividing the students who need them into smaller groups, so as to avoid crowds. Even if spaced out and at different times, the return to study, in small groups, is an important step for the children’s academic recovery and also allows a slow return to normality and a recovery of interpersonal relationships , so important at this age and so put to the test by the distancing imposed to fight the Coronavirus. And the staff and teachers have not hidden much satisfaction in finally being able to return to help these children who have in their education and their own potential, the only possibilities to build a different future for Syria. It was like this before Covid19 and it is even more evident and necessary now. In these days the operators are trying to organize the start of the other courses as well, always following the safety and prevention rules for Coronavirus indicated by the authorities.
Covid19 has changed everyone’s life and created serious emergency situations especially in countries like Syria, in its tenth year of war, where the economy was already on its knees and the health facilities left standing after the bombings were insufficient. Our commitment continues to be alongside the community that today has even more need for primary goods and care and that wants to resume, as soon as possible, the path of reconstruction of the country.
Thanks to your support and your choice of reciprocity, AMU will be able to remain close to the most vulnerable people and communities in the current moment of crisis and in the recovery path that we hope will begin soon.
