The barbaric murder in Congo of the Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio, of the carabiniere of the escort Vittorio Iacovacci and of the Congolese driver Mustapha Milambo has reminded us that there is an Italy that works in Africa and for Africa, far from the spotlight of the news and often forgotten by the governments and the media. However, we cannot remain silent and archive this tragedy as a fatal act in the “land of lions”. What is happening in Congo, as in other African countries, is something that involves us and affects us directly. The future of Africa does not depend only on some business but the destiny of all of us and our countries. As Mario Giro writes in his book “Guerre nere” (Guerini), Africa is becoming ‘the laboratory of a globalization without mercy or benevolence’. Just think of the consequences on local populations to make room for the exploitation of raw materials, from coltan to cobalt, to destroyed nature. In complete international silence, a long and constant holocaust is taking place in Congo: 6 million dead; 48 women raped every hour; 40,000 children enslaved… And for what? Only so that international powers can plunder the resources of one of the richest countries in the world with impunity. The genocide in Congo has been going on for 20 years now. Groups armed by international powers are fighting each other for control of the country’s mining areas. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Dell and Tesla have been accused of knowingly profiting from child labor in the coltan and cobalt mines. And no one is talking about it or has talked about it. We want to break the silence and relaunch Peace! For this reason we invite you to participate in the live streaming on Tuesday 2 March from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on the ZOOM and FACEBOOK platforms and to spread the invitation to all your friends. They will help us to know and understand the reality: Jean Angelo Ferrari; Leonard Touadi, Mario Giro, Brigitte Kamu, Pierre Kabeza and live from Congo Bwiza Kinamula; Salumu Jean Baptiste; Luisa Flisi, Antonina Lo Schiavo. In the meantime, let’s stop watching and start:

  1. Demand complete transparency in the sourcing of raw materials for the construction of cell phones, televisions, computers, electric motors.
  2. Ask companies guilty of child exploitation – even through third parties – to answer for their crimes, compensating the families involved and promoting a system of extraction of the materials in question that is finally ethical and humane.

The meeting is promoted by Chiama l’Africa in collaboration with: AOI, Solidarietà e Cooperazione CIPSI, Time for Africa, Peace Network for Congo, Tavola della Pace, National Coordination of Local Authorities for Peace and Human Rights, Club for UNESCO of Udine.
