Community and Work. Youssouf’s Inclusion and Friendship with Matteo

A workplace that becomes a community and that supports a young Senegalese in his path of social and work inclusion in Italy. From this community a strong friendship is born. The one that binds Youssouf and Matteo.

Matteo is a technician in charge of the Molino Casillo laboratory, in Corato, Puglia. The room where he works is what he calls “the beating heart of the company”, because it is there that all the flours that will then be put on the market are tested. The Puglian company is one of the links in the network of F are Siste ma Oltre l’Accoglienza , the AMU program that promotes the social and work inclusion of vulnerable people, both Italian and foreign. In that same room, together with Matteo, Youssouf also works, a Senegalese boy that AMU has been following for a long time, accompanying him on a path of inclusion. Matteo and Youssouf met in Bologna, where they became work colleagues and friends: “There I started to teach him a few things: how to prepare bread, focaccia and pizza” says Matteo smiling, for Youssouf he has great respect and many words of praise, he is a punctual, constant, always available guy. For me he is like a brother now, I love him a lot ”. Youssouf - make system Youssouf also thinks the same way: “Matteo taught me this job, to make focaccia and bread, in Senegal I only made baguettes. I am very happy. He is a good boy, a brother”. The two alternate between the machines in the laboratory, they work side by side, they pass tools and flour to each other. They have two complementary personalities: Matteo chats, jokes, laughs; Youssouf is taciturn, he moves with attention and care in the work environment. Both carry out a job that they are passionate about, and they know the secrets of the different flours: “For a few months Youssouf has been telling me that he would like to open a bakery in Senegal to give work to his brothers. In fact he is saving some money for this project”. If Youssouf needs something, at work or outside, Matteo gives him a hand, without thinking twice. Youssouf’s path to inclusion in Corato, where he now lives, was possible thanks to people like Matteo and to a community that has networked : his co-workers, of course, but also the company he works for that believed in the possibility of training and integrating this talented boy into the workforce. And giving him the opportunity to put his skills to use.
