In collaboration with the local association “El Chajá,” operating in the departments of Florida and Durazno, the project supports 60 people—30 men and 30 women—in their post-prison social and work reintegration journey.

In Uruguay, thousands of people live behind bars. They are men and women who have made mistakes, often young people who grew up in poverty, violence, or neglect. Many have never finished school, some cannot read. Almost none find stable employment after detention.
Today, over 14,000 people in the country are deprived of their liberty. The prison population has tripled in twenty years . Yet, once out, freedom doesn’t always mean a second chance: more than half return to prison within a short time.
Prison alone isn’t enough to change a life. But human support, a learned skill, a helping hand at the right time can make the difference between going back and truly starting over .
