The success of community microcredit in Burundi also comes from the constant work and trust that is created in the field between the agents and the members of the groups.
Jimmy is one of the leaders of the community microcredit group that operates in the province of Ruyigi, in the municipalities of Butezi and Ruyigi. From the beginning, Jimmy has supported old and new microcredit groups to improve their internal functioning and make the most of what they have learned during their training. Conducting group meetings and correctly filling out registers, for example, are activities that improve with time and practice. For this reason , the figure of the field agent, who accompanies and assists the groups from training to the performance of certain activities, is fundamental : ” I have noticed that there are elements that the members have overlooked in relation to the training received, especially on how to fill out the savings and credit register, ” Jimmy explains. Now we work together to put into practice what they had learned. I find that there is an improvement in filling out the register, now I do everything possible so that at least three members are able to do this work. Also in the distribution of roles (president, secretary, treasurer, …), I help them rotate so that each member of the executive committee is interchangeable and knows how to carry out the role he is in charge of ”. Claver is one of the protagonists of microcredit in Bujumbura. He arrived in the city to find work, with the little means he had, he managed to build a small shop with various goods. With Jean-Claude, another land agent, he met the community microcredit group thanks to which he was able to expand his kiosk: “ Belonging to the group has done me good. Before, I would not have had the means to expand my small business. – he tells us enthusiastically -. I asked for a credit of 120,000 BIF that I used to renovate my shop and stock up on food products that I didn’t have before, such as potatoes, bananas, beans and others “. The Si può fare project also aims to support those businesses that are growing and that need more credit to be able to expand , just like Claver would like to do, who confides in us: ” The space where I work is very small. Once I have enough capital, I would like to build a proper house where I can work and I would like a shop to sell beans and rice, in large quantities. It is my dream that I would like to realize ”.
