While continuing to support the population that has suffered serious damage from the recent floods, the hospital boat “Pope Francis” has begun vaccinations with doses provided by local authorities.

The latest floods recorded in the lower Amazon region have put the survival of the already extremely vulnerable and isolated communities that live along the river to the test. In just a few weeks, these populations have lost their homes, flooded by the waters, and their boats and fishing nets, essential tools for their livelihood. For this reason, the care and prevention project for the ribeirinhos, as soon as the waters began to recede, also accompanied the population in the hard work of cleanup and restoration of homes and wells for drinking water . Two fundamental conditions for the return of the ribeirinhos to their homes.

Aguinaldo – a married deacon and leader of one of the communities located in the region – told us how his area was hit hard by the floods. Many, like him, lost their homes, animals and small boats and nets needed for fishing.
With the contributions received from the campaign, it was possible to reach the families of the community with food and what was necessary to respond to the emergency: clothes, medicines and products to purify and make drinkable water. In addition, some nets were repurchased to allow them to resume work.

The project is part of the “A Vaccine for All” campaign which has also enabled the activation of a strong collaboration with local authorities: Municipality, Secretary of Health, Diocese, and other organizations and trade unions present in the area.

Today, the hospital ship, together with the staff of the SUS (Sistema Unico Sanitario) that provides the vaccines, of the municipality and with the support of the churches that have made their spaces available, has begun to immunize these communities from COVID19, usually isolated and not reached by public health.

In addition to the missions for the administration of vaccines, the donations received support the distribution of food and basic necessities to families in difficulty, devices for prevention from the virus and drugs and the assistance of health workers (who, for example, offer respiratory rehabilitation courses) to support the rehabilitation of those who have had the disease.
