The latest action promoted by the R.I.S.E. program in Syria was launched in mid-July and included a series of training meetings held in the cities of Aleppo and Homs , dedicated to the theme “Active Citizenship – Awareness Raising and Activation of Community Engagement”. The idea was born in light of the social, political, and economic challenges that Syrian society continues to face, especially in light of recent political developments.
Engaging young people for Syria’s future
A civic education path to build the future
The courses offered young men and women the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the fundamental values of active citizenship., starting with an analysis of Syria’s historical and contemporary contexts. This process fostered constructive dialogue, intellectual exchange, and a new awareness of individual roles in promoting social change.
Above all, it was a call to action , addressed to the new generations of Syrians.
Three courses in Aleppo and Homs: Diversity as wealth
In total, three courses were held , each lasting two months: two in Aleppo , one in Homs .
Each course involved 25 participants aged between 25 and 40, from different cultures, religions and social backgrounds.
This diversity enriched the discussion and allowed us to immediately put into practice the concepts discussed during the meetings.
Testimonies from participants
“An essential need for our community” – Lena, Homs
Lena, a participant in the Homs course and a graduate in agricultural and environmental engineering, says:
This course helped me correct some misconceptions I had in the past. I’ve attended other courses, but I feel this one provided me with accurate and reliable information. I appreciated the spirit of sharing among all the participants. I sincerely hope that similar courses can be offered again here in Homs, as they meet a crucial need. I would like to thank all the trainers: their experience and teaching were invaluable.
“A Network of Relationships for the Country’s Future” – Bashar, Homs
Bashar, a PhD student in mechanical engineering, shares his experience:
“The course on active citizenship clarified many things for me. It was rich in content, but what made it particularly special was the practical aspect, which involved participants from all over Syria. The course helped me understand the concept of active citizenship and made me realize that there are others who, like me, dream of a Syria founded on peace, security, and justice. Furthermore, it created a network of relationships and connections that form the basis for further collaboration.”
The voice of the trainers
“A precious diversity to grow together” – Natali, trainer
Natali, trainer of the active citizenship course, underlines the value of the group:
“The diversity among the participants was particularly valuable: people working in various sectors of society, with different experiences in the heart of Aleppo. We were able to share our knowledge, and they had the opportunity to ask questions and delve deeper.”
