The project with which AMU accompanied small entrepreneurial initiatives in Cuba to provide them with adequate knowledge for the management of private businesses (according to the principles of the Economy of Communion and the Economy of Francis) has ended. But everything that has been sown since this adventure began remains in the field and produces its fruits. These two small realities born in the town of El Caney, a few kilometers from Santiago de Cuba, are an example of this. One of the activities visited by the EoC team was a nursery school that offers an alternative training space to 70 children, employing 15 people. The methodology used with these little ones is “the art of loving”, which can be summarized with these proposals: “love everyone, love first, love the other as yourself, love each other and love the enemy”. The testimonies of those who work there, the joy of the children and the gratitude of the parents are clear signs that the pedagogical proposal works well. EcoArte , on the other hand, is an activity formed by a group of women who have come together around their passion for sewing, embroidery and other manual arts. Its fundamental purpose is not economic, but has to do with feeling useful, in company, enjoying one’s free time and not being a burden at home. The proceeds from the sale of their works are partly redistributed among the participants and the remainder reinvested in their business. In some meetings organized in Santiago de Cuba, the EdC and Economy of Francis entrepreneurs have discussed their experiences to support each other; not only so that their small businesses are economically efficient, but also so that they have a positive impact on the community from a social point of view . For this, they have organized cooking, sewing and craft courses and provide – as their contribution to the community – food to those in need. The current Cuban reality requires commitment, creativity and perseverance so that one can realize one’s dreams and build a better life. The EdC/EdF Hub continues to support entrepreneurs to understand their vocation and make it a reality, and to promote the human values of solidarity, joy and kindness . Entrepreneurs are today a sign of hope in Cuba.
A sign of hope in Cuba
Last May, the EoC team visited the participants of the business training project in Santiago de Cuba. And they met two of the activities supported by the EoC Hub and the Economy of Francis. The project is closed, but its buds continue to grow.
