The new project for the supply of drinking water (and more!) to the families of the community of Ruyigi, in Burundi, begins.
Burundi is the second most densely populated country in Africa and one of the five poorest countries in the world with almost 65% of the population living below the poverty line. The health situation is also worrying : many diseases still persist, some of which are communicable, and the presence of parasites due to the lack of drinking water and safe hygienic conditions. Health care is a mirage : only 1% of private workers and those in the formal public sector have insurance, for the rest of the population treatment is paid for. In this context , drinking water is an indispensable condition for ensuring good health, but access to sources remains difficult and closed to a large part of the population. Even the use of ecological and controlled latrines can do a lot, but to date it is not within the reach of the majority of the people of Ruyigi who still use traditional latrines and open pits. The Project in Ruyigi includes the extension of the drinking water network to all the communities in the area and in the hills of Nombe, Nyarunazi and Kigamba/Rubaragaza, and the rehabilitation of the existing one in Karaba-Misugi-Kigamba. The theme of health and hygiene will be addressed both with the experimental installation of 40 ecological latrines (plus 2 at the Nombe elementary school), and with training courses to learn safe behaviors for proper personal hygiene and hygiene of the places where one lives. Finally, to address the challenges related to access to healthcare, the action will raise awareness and help beneficiaries to structure themselves in a community health mutual , or join existing community health mutuals, in order to respond to the current difficulties related to access to healthcare. As in all AMU projects, the involvement of the local community is crucial for the construction, management and maintenance of the infrastructure. As in the past, in fact, after careful training, the structures will be entrusted to the care of citizens. The project “Water, source of life and development in Ruyigi” is another important piece of what AMU and CASOBU have been doing for over ten years to support local communities in their development path, always placing the needs of the community and reciprocity between all the actors involved at the forefront.
