In Syria, assistance continues for cancer patients followed by the health center of the AMU “Syria Emergency” program.

The year 2020 will be remembered around the world as a terrible spring. Even in Syria, where usually in this period the climate and nature call for outdoor life and conviviality with friends and relatives, the precautions to avoid the spread of the Coronavirus have forced people to stay at home. The health project in Homs, co-financed in 2019 by UBI – Unione Buddhista Italiana, is part of the “Emergenza Siria” program and provides support and care to people with cancer. Although the rules of distancing and confinement, to limit contagion from Covid19, have made it more difficult to provide services, the operators of the health center have managed to reorganize the distribution by involving friends and family. In order to overcome the impossibility of movement of people, in fact, many of the deliveries were made at home, thus managing to provide chemotherapy and other drugs, even to all those people who would not have been able to access treatment with their own means, because they could not afford to go out or pay the cost of transportation, made increasingly high by inflation. In other cases, some patients reach the operators. As for the J.’s family, a chemotherapy patient who lives in a village outside Homs, and who this time received permission to go to the city to get the medicines. Unlike before, however, only the father came, to avoid the risk of contagion from Coronavirus to his son, who is already severely immunosuppressed. Being able to reach patients in their homes has strengthened the relationship of trust by giving us the opportunity to offer psychological help, even just by listening to the fears related to the Coronavirus and the living conditions that, due to the pandemic and the permanence of the embargo, are putting the survival of the population to the test. Thanks to your contributions and your choice of reciprocity , the AMU will be able to remain close to the sick people of Homs in the current moment of crisis and in the recovery process that we hope will begin soon.
