During the Coronavirus pandemic, the embargo imposed on Syria is preventing the population, exhausted by almost 10 years of war, from recovering. The increase in prices of all products, from food to medicines, makes the salary (for those who still have one) insufficient to buy basic necessities, testing and demeaning the population throughout Syria. Due to the blockade and suspension of imports of many goods, our operators of the “Syria Emergency” program explain to us how difficult it has become to guarantee medicines, especially non-national ones, for our health programs . Furthermore, to change the therapy and replace it with easier-to-find drugs, it is necessary to consult the doctor, something that many families cannot afford due to the very high cost of a visit. Despite everything, the operators of the “Syria Emergency” program continue to carry out small initiatives. In Homs, for example, in addition to distributing medicines for cancer patients with the project co-financed by UBI – Unione Buddhista Italiana, made more vulnerable by the Coronavirus, small subsidies for current expenses and food baskets donated also by those who know the program and by some of its protagonists were distributed. These initiatives have fueled a circle of reciprocity that has allowed many to offer their contribution, in various forms, even if small. A friend of one of our operators, involved in bringing baskets and medicines to some families with his car, refused any reimbursement for the petrol. A family, despite being in serious difficulty, when the time came to receive the basket with the food, asked to give it to someone who was more in need because they had already received one a few days before. The Coronavirus emergency does not stop the push to generate experiences of sharing and reciprocity between people who, despite not having much, can still give. Every gesture makes a difference and thanks to your contributions AMU will be able to stay close to the communities in this moment of crisis and in the recovery path that we hope will begin soon.
