The operators of the health care project in Homs, also funded thanks to UBI – Unione Buddhista Italiana – within the “Emergenza Siria” program , continue to support chronic cancer patients even in this period, providing them with therapies and food aid in the most difficult cases. Some manage to collect the aid by themselves, others, due to a lack of means for travel, confidently await the arrival of the operators. The difficult situation, after almost 10 years of war, has become desperate . With the advent of the Coronavirus , accompanying and supporting families in Syria has become crucial for survival. Warda, one of the protagonists of the Homs assistance project, told our operators her story and how she is experiencing this Coronavirus pandemic.
“I have cancer and since the beginning of my illness I should have had tests every 3 months, but I couldn’t afford them. My husband didn’t work much, we were in a very difficult economic situation and I had chosen not to take my medicine every day to make it last longer and not have to buy it often.
Then I received help from Samer and Dareen from the Homs health project and thanks to them I was able to have regular tests and receive the necessary medicines for cancer and other problems.
Now, with the Coronavirus emergency, my husband is back home, he doesn’t work, he is frustrated and very often we argue even for no reason.
We live every day with the terror of getting sick, of being infected because our situation would worsen in ways we dare not imagine.
We cannot afford the Corona Virus, we could not face the visits, the treatments and everything that would entail.
Meeting you and your support are precious, without it we wouldn’t know what to do. I remember when I had to limit the use of medicines even if they were necessary. Now I hope that the virus won’t touch us and that my husband can at least go back to work a little as soon as possible”.
Every day, thanks to the commitment of our local operators, we are alongside communities in difficulty made even more vulnerable by the Coronavirus. Thanks to your contributions, Amu will be able to remain close to the most vulnerable people and communities in the current moment of crisis and in the recovery process.
