Syria, Bassam has returned to work for his seven children

The man, a resident of Homs, could no longer provide a decent life for his family. Supported by the RestarT program, he was able to restart his activity as an electrician and start working again. And his life changed.

Bassam, a young Syrian man who lives in the city of Homs, in a modest apartment with his wife and their children, has seven children. He is an electrician. He has always practiced this profession. Before the war and the serious crisis that hit Syria, Bassam was able to work and was able to ensure a dignified life for his family . Then, with the outbreak of the conflict, the lives of Bassam’s children changed drastically. The war took away Bassam’s job first, then his home. The man went through a period of psychological distress that shook his family life. This is a recurring situation in Syria today. The population has to face numerous difficulties that often result in not being able to guarantee children respect for some fundamental rights , such as health and education. Many people live on casual and poorly paid jobs: a condition that undermines confidence in the future and the desire to resist and remain in the country. With the RestarT program, AMU intervenes precisely to accompany unemployed people, who have work experience behind them, in restarting their business. Therefore, their life. The support provided consists of useful tools for work. Thus Bassam received drills, electrical wires, light bulbs : everything necessary to return to the profession of electrician. This is practical material of course, but it is also very valuable on a psychological level: Bassam took his life back into his own hands , threw himself headlong into his work, many customers trusted him, and – finally – he opened a small shop selling electrical materials. His family, his seven children, are no longer at risk of having to leave Syria to survive. And since the RestarT project involves a commitment of reciprocity , Bassam has committed to doing his job for free for those who live in poverty in his neighborhood.
