Tarawa is the largest island in the vast Pacific archipelago that forms the Republic of Kiribati.
The country has a big underlying problem: the gradual rise in sea level is taking away land for agriculture, with negative effects on labour and power quality. Only 10% of the population has a regular job, while all the others live by their wits.
Due to global warming, nobody is able to stop the sea from advancing, so the government aims to provide the inhabitants with a placement abroad or in other parts of the country.
Within a few decades it is expected that the archipelago will be totally submerged.
The aim of our project is to improve the living conditions of the Buota community, one of the poorest villages on the island of Tarawa, through targeted initiatives for women and children.
The main activities are:
• Convert a small existing building into a nursery and supply it with educational, cooking, communication and sports equipment;
• Provide two teachers for one year;
• Equip a handicraft workshop for the children’s mothers;
• Carry out seminars on health, hygiene, nutrition, child upbringing and family relationships for the mothers, and educational insights for the children on the same topics;
• Organise vocational training courses for women (handicrafts and sewing).

Tarawa è l’isola più grande di quel vasto arcipelago del Pacifico che costituisce la Repubblica di Kiribati.
Il Paese ha un grosso problema di fondo: il progressivo innalzamento del livello del mare sta sottraendo terre all’agricoltura, con effetti negativi sulle attività lavorative e sulla qualità dell’alimentazione. Solo il 10% della popolazione ha un lavoro regolare, mentre tutti gli altri vivono di espedienti.
Non potendo arrestare l’avanzata del mare, dovuta al surriscaldamento globale, il governo punta a fornire agli abitanti una collocazione all’estero o in altre parti del Paese. Si prevede che fra alcuni decenni tutto l’arcipelago sarà sommerso.
Obiettivo del progetto è quello di migliorare le condizioni di vita della comunità di Buota, uno dei villaggi più poveri dell’isola di Tarawa, attraverso iniziative mirate per le donne e i bambini.
Le principali attività previste sono:
- Adibire un piccolo edificio esistente a scuola materna e fornirlo di attrezzature didattiche, per la cucina, per la comunicazione e per le attività sportive;
- Finanziare il lavoro di due insegnanti per un anno;
- Attrezzare un laboratorio di artigianato per le madri dei bambini;
- Realizzare seminari sui temi della salute, igiene, nutrizione, educazione dei figli e rapporti familiari per le madri, ed approfondimenti didattici per i bambini sugli stessi argomenti;
- Corsi di formazione professionale per le donne (artigianato e cucito).
