Now that clean water has reached the commune of Buetzi, the inhabitants are trying to make the most of such a precious commodity.
On one of his most recent visits to Nombe Hill, Jerome, project manager for CASOBU, saw how the excitement of this novelty had turned into awareness-raising and taking responsibility. For example, as he learned from the training he received in the ‘water management committees’, the inhabitants of the hill have secured the drinking fountains with fences.
Moreover, having drinking water close to their homes has also been changing people’s relationship with the resource. Euphrème, who lives in Runanzi, has created a small garden next to one of the communal fountains, which she now waters periodically. “We are so happy that we now have clean water and can draw it close to our homes. It was really difficult for us before. Now that the water is close to us, I decided to set up a small garden where I started growing amaranth. I could feed the family by diversifying the meals. Later I think I might be able to sell part of the harvest to provide for the family’s other needs”.
Supporting the Water Source of Life in Ruyigi project is crucial because, as well as bringing drinking water to communities that previously did not have any, it helps the communities themselves to discover how to improve different aspects of their lives. From health to nutrition, starting with water.
