Family production activities in Burundi

There is currently a new microcredit project promoted by the Burundian Association CASOBU together with AMU. The project will be destined to 1250 families in the provinces of Ruyigi, Bujumbura and Rumonge.

The strengthening project the “family production activities” through micro-credit is a continuation of previous projects in Burundi, especially the last one, implemented in Ruyigi province (Microcredit and strengthening of the rural cooperative system) with the financial support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Italy).

For several years now the CASOBU association promotes the creation of small savings and credit groups for vulnerable families, formed according to the microcredit model CECI (Communautés d’Epargne et Crédit Internes). A model whose application has proved to be particularly effective in fighting poverty, because it returns to the people, however poor they may be, the dignity to give. In fact, the credit for setting up small income-generating family activities is not granted from an external financial institution, but comes directly from the group’s ability to self-manage their own economy and savings. A system that, moreover, creates deep bonds between members of the group, thanks to the sharing of objectives, needs and common training.

For about two years, CASOBU decided to take another step forward, starting the conversion into a cooperative of the most committed groups, in order to make small production activities more stable and lasting.

AMU and CASOBU have once again decided, after a first year of activity, to work together in the project. On the one hand they support the strengthening of the administrative and management capacities of the cooperatives already launched in Ruyigi last year. On the other hand they will accompany the formation of new cooperatives in Bujumbura. The experience of saving and credit groups will also be proposed to vulnerable families from Bugarama (Rumonge province) in order to improve their economic situation.
