A TREE TRUNK AS A CHAIR

“Let’s go all to school!”, the project in Idjwi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The image of kids studying sitting on wooden benches is evocative, using their knees as a desk. Evocative but impractical, not to mention the problems that such a prolonged posture over the years can cause to the spine.

It happens in the northern part of the island of Idjwi, where the Bumpeta parish has started a high school in pedagogical and social sciences, in order to train future teachers for the island. A school thus pointing to the future but that has to deal with the underdevelopment of the present situation, with a population that struggles to escape poverty.

The school is attended by 900 mixed students. In some classes there are crumbling desks, in other classes they are missing altogether.

Given the purpose of the project that points convincingly at the future of the country, and given the active participation of the population, AMU has decided to work together with the parish and provide the missing benches to the school, 308 in all.
